Astaxanthin is a natural carotenoid from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis , which produces the red pigment as a protective response to environmental stress such as UV radiation. This exceptional protective function makes astaxanthin particularly exciting for research: As one of the most powerful antioxidants known, it has been proven to protect cells from oxidative stress – a key factor in aging processes and chronic inflammation. Due to the increasing body of research since the 2000s, the NEOaging scientific team has intensively analyzed the active ingredient and integrated it into the development of evidence-based longevity products.

Oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction as drivers of aging

As we age, our mitochondria, the powerhouses of the cell, produce increasing amounts of harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS). This imbalance leads to oxidative stress, which damages cells and their DNA—a key factor in aging. Astaxanthin acts as a powerful antioxidant directly in the mitochondrial membranes, neutralizing ROS and thus protecting cell structure and function. This can slow the aging process at the cellular level. Since aging is caused by interconnected biological processes, astaxanthin targets an important cause and offers promising potential for the prevention of cellular dysfunction.

Dosage & Quality: What studies show about effective use

  • Effective dosage : 8–12 mg daily is considered effective for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, especially when taken for at least 8–12 weeks.
  • Dose-effect relationship : Higher dosages may be useful for specific goals (e.g. endurance, fat metabolism).
  • Active ingredient quality : Studies predominantly use natural astaxanthin from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis – this shows better stability, bioavailability and tolerability than synthetic AST.
  • How to take : As a fat-soluble active ingredient, astaxanthin should always be taken with a meal (with fat) to improve absorption.
  • Recommendation : 8 mg of natural astaxanthin daily is considered safe and effective according to EFSA.
