Astaxanthin

Protection from algae: Natural power against UV radiation

AstaxanthinAstaxanthin is a red pigment from the carotenoid group, found primarily in microalgae such as Haematococcus pluvialis (also known as red rain algae) and in certain marine organisms like crustaceans and fish. It is responsible for the characteristic coloration of these organisms, particularly the pinkish to reddish appearance of salmon, crabs, and shrimp. As a secondary plant compound, astaxanthin protects these algae and organisms from UV radiation. It is fat-soluble and should therefore be consumed with fats or oils.
